Larian Studios Announce a Fresh Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG to Date

The speculation surrounding The Game Awards was significant, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a strange statue. The secret has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer that included intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team is likely designing a real-time experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a announcement clip is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it sparked the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, branching plots, and deep class systems—qualities that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs you can achieve with a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.

The series is also notoriously flexible, letting players to experiment both in story and combat. Most missions can be solved in multiple ways, often in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can look forward to more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
